Liberia

The spirited provincial capital of Liberia has a distinctively friendly and open feel. Its blinding white houses are a legacy of the pioneering farmers and cattle ranchers who founded it. Liberia's wide, clean streets are used more by cyclists and horsemen than motorists, and you can enjoy a pleasant walk around in the shade provided by the mango trees, though be sure to watch out for the ripe fruit plopping down full-force at your feet. Most travelers use the town simply as a jumping-off point for the national parks of Rincon de la Vieja and Santa Rosa, an overnight stop to or from the beaches of Guanacaste, or a break on the way to Nicaragua, but it also boasts several lively local festivals , the most elaborate of which is on July 25, El Dia de la Independencia , celebrating Guanacaste's independence from Nicaragua with parades, horseshows, cattle auctions, rodeos, fiestas and roving marimba bands.

Over the past couple of years it has become more and more popular with tourists, just recently a new international airport in Liberia has opened up and many American airline carriers are now flying into Liberia. Although the city of Liberia is not a metropolis as San Jose or any of its surrounding cities, Liberia is a small quiet city where a colonial atmosphere still exists. Because of Liberia’s new found popularity there are plans to renovate the downtown area as well as adding expanding the pedestrian mall.
